The Carineña DO is located within Aragon’s Zaragosa province. Along with neighboring DO’s Campo de Borja and Calatayud, Carineña’s main red varietal is Garnacha (Grenache). Similar to the hot and dry climate of Rhône, this region of Spain allows Grenache to grow to its fullest potential under the blazing sun. However, abundant sunlight does not guarantee a good wine. Many of the local wines are fruity and easy-drinking, but many also lack tannin, structure and weight. Baron de Funes strives to make serious, balanced wine, so they blend their Garnacha with Syrah.
